AROUND CANGGU

The coastal community 10km north of Kuta hums with smart new villas, city-slick restaurants and delicious little shops that seem to have sprung up overnight. There is no question Canggu is the new hot-spot in Bali and it is truly burgeoning. Located a 15 minute drive north of Seminyak, idyllic yet vibrant Canggu draws a diverse crowd – from surfers to families with young children, with its myriad attractions. There’s excellent surf, swathes of black sand beaches, colourful beachfront venues and quaint shopping haunts dotted across the town.

While Seminyak can be chaotic and rushed, Canggu still holds on to it its earthy roots, there are twice the number of green spaces and rice fields than further south, with lush foliage spilling out onto black and white sand beaches, some of them world renowned for their surf breaks.   Canggu throws out plenty of options for beach lovers: Nelayan Beach is great for swimming and wading, Berawa Beach draws surfers and swimmers alike and the beaches of Pererenan and Echo are best suited for advanced surfers.

Overlooking some of these ocean vistas are the relatively new big beach clubs – venues like Vue and Finns, or the bohemian La Laguna. La Brisa is an eclectic recent addition, as well as the Lawn, Old Man’s and 707, with some of these haunts attracting over 2000 patrons on any given day or evening. Dotted with a mind bending and waistline enhancing plethora of amazing cafes and restaurants, spas and wellness centres, and the biggest equestrian centre in Bali, Canggu is alive and humming yet manages to retain its bohemian and laid back feeling.
